For your perusal, here's the illustration I did for my 2016 holiday card. Line art is something I'm fairly incompetent at and this is only my second or third attempt at human subjects, so here's hoping you weren't expecting anything amazing. Needless to say, if you're receiving this as a card and would like to be surprised when it arrives, don't click into the cut. If you somehow missed that I was sending cards, and you want one, PM me your details.

Drabble inspired by a comment from [livejournal.com profile] mywitch:
Severus Snape, when faced with the prospect of a daughter, had a long, hard think about things. A son might have been more intuitively comfortable -- after all, he'd been a son, and he'd had a father, and... well, look how that turned out. So perhaps this was all for the best, really. And there weren't any rules that said women couldn't rule the world. After all, Hermione was making excellent progress in that direction, and there was clearly a lot to be said for organizational acumen coupled to a really excellent pair of bre...Oh dear. Brain. A really excellent brain. He was going to have to rethink his oft-unspoken appreciation of the female form, wasn't he? Because people would leer at his daughter, when they should be cowering, or at least scrambling to assist her rise to power as she followed in her mother's footsteps. Maybe she'd have his nose. That would help, surely. Preemptively hexing the entire male population of Britain was impractical, although not without its appeal.

And so it was that a particular study fell upon highly fertile ground. It demonstrated, quite convincingly, that a daughter's ambition and drive were well correlated with how often fathers were seen taking an equal role in domestic tasks. So Severus Snape rolled up his shirtsleeves, and declared, in no uncertain terms, "Woman, go govern the Wizarding World. I shall do the washing up."

Hello lovely! OMG Thank you thank you! I just got mine in the mail today! Severus and baby girl are so gorgeously drawn! I love his loose, comfy outfit and her cute, giggling face :D And Mama out back filling the hummingbird feeder. SIgh, what a happy, content family, baking biscuits for the hols. This is really lovely, Zig. The perspective is all kinds of perfection . It reminds me a bit of one of those illustrated ads from the 50s or 60s, only I think Sev would be in his chair with a pipe and the little women would be doing all the work, lol. ❤️

I'm glad you've enjoyed this. I commented to someone else that I'm so unrelentingly mean to the characters when I write fiction, that I felt I ought to create at least one little bit of fluff and happiness. I was going for something reminiscent of that magazine illustration look, actually, so I'm totally thrilled that came across.

And now your comment about the chair and pipe has sparked a little drabble in my head:

Severus Snape, when faced with the prospect of a daughter, had a long, hard think about things. A son might have been more intuitively comfortable -- after all, he'd been a son, and he'd had a father, and... well, look how that turned out. So perhaps this was all for the best, really. It goes perfectly with your gorgeous illustration!
And ever the researcher, a link to an actual study backing it all up. :D

Aww, thank you so much. I'm literally grinning ear-to-ear! I've also taken your suggestion under advisement, and tacked the drabble onto my post at AO3. I've no idea where else to put this; I totally missed the boat on any of the community-based fests that are ongoing, on account of having been without internet when signups were happening.

Thank you for your comment! I'm sure she's had many technical briefings in the exact art and subtle science of baked goods. And I certainly don't mind your adding me, although you may be disappointed in that my posts are usually just about RL stuff, and fairly uninteresting for all that.

My darling girl, you have hit another home run over center field! I am totally in love with the Snape family, and that bright-eyed, giggling girl is going to break some hearts before she's through. Love, love, love Severus' nose.

[livejournal.com profile] mywitch is right on the money about this scene being reminiscent of the adverts from the 50s and 60s. It takes me back to my Home Economics classes in high school (1961) and my favorite magazines from during time– Family Circle with Peg Bracken's hilarious articles, and Better Homes and Gardens. And Irma Bombeck!! She was a wonderfully funny writer, too.

It just occurred to me that maybe Severus would be willing to share his cookie recipe with all of his fans.

I'm positively squirming with glee, hearing I've captured that feel. When I [quite perceptively, for me] realized I wasn't going to have anywhere near enough time to do the coloured illustration I'd originally thought of, I settled on line art and dove into my [very] old NatGeos and early 70s sewing patterns for inspiration. I had to work fast on this, because there are Other Things I Must Do with my time, and I wanted to get cards sent in time for the holiday, so I wasn't sure it was going to turn out in any way similar to what I'd envisioned.

I'm so glad you like this! My fiction is often so... erm, well, it's my fiction. A perceptive soul on AO3 commented that they couldn't picture what a Zig fluff-fic would even look like... I wanted to create something happy and calm and uncomplicated for the holidays (there's something else, ahem, Inkstains, that is the precise antithesis of that sentiment, so fear not!), and this is what percolated up out of my weird little brain.

And for shame, only special people get the Sooper Sekrit Biscuit Recipe. ;) ('Severus' spent a long time experimenting with that.)

Hi! I'm here by way of [livejournal.com profile] mywitch.... OH MY HEAVENS I LOVE THIS!!!! First of all, the illustration is so incredibly sweet, and so lovingly balanced, letting each character quietly shine. My favorite detail is the wand in Sev's back pocket! The drabble is fantastic, too. I am constantly amazed by the immense amount of talent in this fandom, and I'm so happy I got to see this! By the way, I've been really enjoying your comments on MyWitch's illustrations- you have a keen eye and a wonderful way with words. Happy Holidays! ❤️

Thanks! Feminism as practised by Snape is really just advanced deployment of highly skilled patriarchial posturing with the aim of literal genetic subversion of a system. Or, well, I'm sure he tells himself that to feel much better about things.

Haha, I love this. Your line art is excellent, all three look sensational, although she might tell Severus he could blast his buttock off by keeping his wand in his back pocket. 😉

Well done.
